Homecoming Parade
When: 9th of October. The march starts exactly at 5 or 6 pm so we need to be there earlier.
Where: It starts from the Field next to open swimming pool.
About: The homecoming parade is one of the State College’s traditions held in the beginning of winter each year. It is a good chance for us to represent our club in the march to students, locals and alumni. Many people take their seat and watch the parade with their families and friends.
This year, we will take part in this event as usual with a car (Galip’s red car). We will be marching in front of the car with our flags, posters and some traditional items (depending on our planning, creativity and budget- this is where we need to brainstorm). The most important thing is that we need to be in the gathering area around 1 hour before the parade starts. We will get an email quite soon with final details and definitely forward the information to you.
The Turkish Night
When: 23rd of October, 7 pm
Where: The HUB Heritage Hall
About: This is TSA's most important event of the year. It is our cultural night where we introduce our culture through music, dance and food with the celebration of the Republic Day of Turkey 29th of October (1923). Formal dresscode will be required for the event. We are expecting the number of participants to be around 200, including students, alumnus and Penn State faculty members.
Here are important details:
Get excited! We will be providing traditional Turkish dishes which will include 5 appetizers and a variety of non-alcoholic beverages.
For entertainment purposes, we will host a Turkish folk dance group, Turquoise will be showing their talents and performing folk dances from different regions of Turkey. On the top the culturally-engaging folk dance group, this year we invited a Turkish mainstream music band located in Washington D.C. and they are definitely worth a listen. On a fun note, their name is also Turquoise and we promise this is not the only word we have in Turkish.
Commemoration of Ataturk
Commemoration of Ataturk is a very important day for Turkish people where get together to commemorate the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on the 10th of November every year. Last year we met in Websters Cafe, and our club advisor, Savas Yavuzkurt, delivered an engaging presentation on the matter and performed his "baglama", turkish traditional instrument.
Details for this year's event will be out soon, stay tuned!
